KINGSTON, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Porto midfielder Stephen Eustaquio struck late to hand Canada a 2-1 away win over Jamaica in the first leg of their CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal on Saturday.
Canada took the lead just before halftime when Cyle Larin's cross from the right byline found an unmarked Jonathan David, who tapped in at the far post.
Jamaica equalized in the 56th minute after Daniel Johnson caught Canada's defense napping. The Stoke City midfielder used a direct free-kick from distance to send a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Shamar Nicholson, who took one touch before rifling a shot past goalkeeper Andre Blake.
But the goal prompted the visitors to raise their intensity and Eustaquio broke the deadlock five minutes from time by sweeping a first-time effort into the far corner after Richie Laryea's cut-back.
"We wanted to come out of here with a result," Canada manager Mauro Biello said. "So, the first phase, mission accomplished for us.
"It was a competitive game. We knew coming in here it would be a very difficult with the quality of players on their team."
The second leg will be played at BMO Field in Toronto on Tuesday.
